BoatsThe sailboats in this collection were entries in the 2001-2002 Whitbread Round the World Race, now renamed the Volvo Ocean Race. The race is the most prestigious event in the professional sailing calendar, which also includes the Americas Cup. I was lucky enough to be aboard a Coast Guard buoy tender that served as one of the starting line points during the Annapolis, MD leg of the race and took a number of photographs to use as source material for the paintings.Boats
Coastal CarolinaThis grouping contains pictures of the Outer Banks and Topsail Beach areas of North Carolina. Most of the paintings were based on photographs the artist took when she was keeper of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, from 1997-2002.Coastal Carolina
Coastal CottagesThis collection of cottages on North Carolina barrier islands includes images of the historic Nags Head Row Cottages, houses in the off-road area of the northern Outer Banks, and those in Corolla, including the Currituck Beach Lighthouse Compound.Coastal Cottages
HorsesHorses are not native to North America. But for more than 400 years, the small, swift and sturdy horses whose forebears once roamed the sands of Arabia have had free run of the beaches of the Currituck Outer Banks. Spanish conquistadors explored what is now coastal North Carolina in the early 1500s, bringing with them livestock including cattle, sheep, and pigs and horses bred in Puerto Rico. Much of the livestock made the final leg of their long journey by swimming ashore. Other Spanish-bred horses made their way to the Outer Banks aboard English ships and were used for a variety of tasks, including hauling fishing nets and serving on Life-Saving Service Beach patrols. Scientific studies have linked today’s Corolla herd to clear Spanish origins. Further studies show that the horses, due to their isolation over the past centuries, have become a breed unto themselves. Corolla’s wild Spanish mustangs have been recognized by the State of North Carolina as a significant historical and cultural resource. Today, the Corolla wild horses are managed by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, Inc. (CWHF). For more information on the Corolla wild horses, visit the CWHF website: www.corollawildhorses.com.Horses
Informal PortraitsThe artist prefers to capture people in informal settings; at the beach, discovering a woolly worm, or dressed in a bear suit. She takes numerous photographs of the subject before beginning her painting, often zooming in to catch the subject unaware.Informal Portraits
LighthousesHaving been a Lighthouse Keeper for five years, the artist is especially fond of painting lighthouses. Included in this grouping are three paintings of Currituck Beach Lighthouse, where she was keeper, and one of Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine.Lighthouses
MaineThe coast of Maine has held a special attraction to my family for several generations. My father spent his summers there as a child and now my brother and his family frequent Biddeford Pool, near Portland. I visited him there in 2007 and was captivated by the rocky coastline and quaint villages, along with the lighthouses and lobsters! This series of paintings is based on photographs I took on that visit. The Episcopal Church, St. Martins in the Field, is located on the nine hole golf course in Biddeford Pool, where my brother often conducts services during the summer months.Maine
My BookMy tape recorded memoir is the basis for my book, The Keepers' House and Other Reflections, life at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. I retired to Hampstead, NC and began painting again in earnest, where the illustrated memoir came to life.My Book
New OrleansWhile acting as Grants Administrator for the NC State Historic Preservation Office, the artist made several trips to New Orleans where she photographed unusual scenes. These pictures are reminiscent of her travels and early morning wanderings in the city.New Orleans
People WatchingCaptivated by drawing and painting figures, the artist displays a collection of her favorites that include people. Here you will find scenes of people in New Orleans, North Carolina and Florida beaches, on the Riverwalk in Wilmington, and in Mexico.People Watching
Rural ScenesThe rural scenes in this collection include a typical eastern North Carolina cotton farm and a round chicken coop in Pennsylvania, near Valley Forge.Rural Scenes
The MediterraneanSeveral friends and I enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise in June 2008 aboard a Holland American ship leaving from (and returning to) Venice. We enjoyed several days in Venice before the departure, and then spent 13 days visiting such ports as Split, Croatia, Athens, Ephesus, Mykonos, Santorini, Olympia and Istanbul. I returned with reference photos galore and will continue to add paintings to this collection. You may notice a slightly different technique in these paintings as I experiment with adding colored pencil details to the watercolors. The Mediterranean
