| Architecture | Currently only one painting in this group, Mission Granary. | |
| Boats | The sailboats in this collection were entries in the 2001-2002 Whitbread Round the World Race, now renamed the Volvo Ocean Race. The race is the most prestigious event in the professional sailing calendar, which also includes the Americas Cup. I was lucky enough to be aboard a Coast Guard buoy tender that served as one of the starting line points during the Annapolis, MD leg of the race and took a number of photographs to use as source material for the paintings. | |
| Coastal Carolina | This grouping contains pictures of the Outer Banks and Topsail Beach areas of North Carolina. Most of the paintings were based on photographs the artist took when she was keeper of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, from 1997-2002. | |
| Coastal Cottages | This collection of cottages on North Carolina barrier islands includes images of the historic Nags Head Row Cottages, houses in the off-road area of the northern Outer Banks, and those in Corolla, including the Currituck Beach Lighthouse Compound. | |
| Horses | Horses are not native to North America. But for more than 400 years, the small, swift and sturdy horses whose forebears once roamed the sands of Arabia have had free run of the beaches of the Currituck Outer Banks. Spanish conquistadors explored what is now coastal North Carolina in the early 1500s, bringing with them livestock including cattle, sheep, and pigs and horses bred in Puerto Rico. Much of the livestock made the final leg of their long journey by swimming ashore. Other Spanish-bred horses made their way to the Outer Banks aboard English ships and were used for a variety of tasks, including hauling fishing nets and serving on Life-Saving Service Beach patrols. Scientific studies have linked today’s Corolla herd to clear Spanish origins. Further studies show that the horses, due to their isolation over the past centuries, have become a breed unto themselves. Corolla’s wild Spanish mustangs have been recognized by the State of North Carolina as a significant historical and cultural resource. Today, the Corolla wild horses are managed by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, Inc. (CWHF). For more information on the Corolla wild horses, visit the CWHF website: www.corollawildhorses.com. | |
| Informal Portraits | The artist prefers to capture people in informal settings; at the beach, discovering a woolly worm, or dressed in a bear suit. She takes numerous photographs of the subject before beginning her painting, often zooming in to catch the subject unaware. | |
| Lighthouses | Having been a Lighthouse Keeper for five years, the artist is especially fond of painting lighthouses. Included in this grouping are three paintings of Currituck Beach Lighthouse, where she was keeper, and one of Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine. | |
| My Book | My tape recorded memoir is the basis for my book, The Keepers' House and Other Reflections, life at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. I retired to Hampstead, NC and began painting again in earnest, where the illustrated memoir came to life. | |
| New Orleans | While acting as Grants Administrator for the NC State Historic Preservation Office, the artist made several trips to New Orleans where she photographed unusual scenes. These pictures are reminiscent of her travels and early morning wanderings in the city. | |
| People Watching | Captivated by drawing and painting figures, the artist displays a collection of her favorites that include people. Here you will find scenes of people in New Orleans, North Carolina and Florida beaches, on the Riverwalk in Wilmington, and in Mexico. | |
| Rural Scenes | The rural scenes in this collection include a typical eastern North Carolina cotton farm and a round chicken coop in Pennsylvania, near Valley Forge. | |
