 A section of the original first order Fresnel lens appears on the left side of this picture. The circular opening originally held ruby glass so the tower could send a signal of red and white flashes to ships within a 19 miles radius of the lighthouse. The lens uses concentric rings of glass prisms to focus the light from a small lamp into a powerful beam.
