 To my amazement someone asked why we needed a picture of a shipwreck in a book about lighthouses. Prevention of shipwrecks was the primary reason for lighthouses. In an 1972 address to Congress about the need for Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Lighthouse Board said, "…many vessels laden with valuable lives and cargoes are in danger of being lost between these points" (Cape Henry to the north and Bodie Island to the south).
