Former lighthouse keeper and state grants administrator, Lloyd Childers focuses her retirement activity on colored pencil and watercolor painting. She began painting watercolors in 2003 after retiring from the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Her works are based on personal photographs of the Outer Banks, including the maritime environment and the Corolla wild horses. Her book, The Keepers’ House and Other Reflections, is a memoir of her life at the lighthouse, illustrated with personal watercolors of the Outer Banks. Many of her paintings are available in matted Giclee prints and note cards.
After returning to Raleigh in 2008, Lloyd began to explore colored pencil painting and continues to concentrate on that medium, with emphasis on informal portraits based on photographs.
Lloyd was born in New Jersey, and lived in Virginia and Ohio before coming to North Carolina. She earned college degrees from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Pursuing a lifelong interest in drawing and painting, and inspired by artists in her family, Lloyd has studied art and exhibited works in Raleigh, the Wilmington area and the Outer Banks. Her works are on display at Somerset Place State Historic Site in Creswell and in private collections.
